The words that I have heard a lot these days are: “comfort” and “nostalgic”. These words make sense when people are stressed. Disney has also noticed the latest trends due to the economy. They are bringing back the Disney matinee. They are testing it in select cities and will expand if it is popular. I bet it will be successful if marketed correctly.
If you are a little older (like me) then you went to the movies as a kid. We didn’t have VHS or DVD’s to watch in front of the TV. I used to go to the movies many Saturday afternoons to watch a Disney classic. How could I forget Flubber, Love Bug, Sword in the Stone, and Escape to Witch Mountain (the originals).
I think Disney is on to something. As I have reported before the movie industry is kicking ass right now. People want to get out of the house. They need the “escape”. They don’t want to spend a lot of money. Why can’t all of us in the live event and entertainment business create stuff too?
I was talking to another longtime event marketer and he mentioned an indoor carnival. This might be a perfect time to do one. Market it as fun and inexpensive. Make it a “get out of the house” kind of event. I bet people will go. There are lots of smaller venues that are always looking for events. Why not book a small theatre in your town and create a “family friendly” Saturday event? There are lots of smaller pre-produced “family” events out there just looking to get booked.
This recession with the little “d” could have a very positive effect on entertainment. There are no such things as “new ideas” just new ways of doing things. Let’s show the world “comfort” and make some money at the same time.
